Compost Competition

Compost is organic material; the silt of the future; not completely decomposed

Compostin is the sub-surface application of organic materials

Mulch is organic material that is put on top of the soil. It keeps the moisture in the soil.

Our compost piles will be made of
50% Nitrogen -rich material: GREEN - Llama beans
50% Carbon-rich material: BROWN - Crushed leaves

Good composition of soil for growing plants:
45% minerals
25% air
25% water
5% organic matter

Soil is the medium in which plants grow

THE CONTEST:
Each group has a compost bin-twin
At the end of our experiment, the group whose bin has the highest quantity of "black gold" will win. The prize is to be determined. Marsha and Priscilla will be primary judges of who wins. In case of a tie or dispute, a third party will be brought in to judge.

Compost cooks best at 140 degrees. If there is nitrogen that is too strong in the mix the temperature can get too high. To bring the temperature down, add air.
