Composting Processes

Enzyme - Protein that speeds up metabolic reactions. All biological processes involve enzymes.

aerobic processes - chemical and organic changes that require oxygen; aerobic decomposition doesn't smell bad

beneficial kitchen scraps - coffee, peels, eggshells, vegetable peels, any raw vegetables or fruit

harmful kitchen scraps - salty things, dairy, oil, meat, pet: food, feces, hair

place compost in a sunny location to raise the temperature

minimum dimensions for a compost pile are 3' x 3' x3'

The relationship between "turning" and compost production is that turning it speeds the process by adding oxygen to the mix. It also keeps the temperature from going too high.

To break down leaves simply, drive a car over them or mow them with a lawn mower.

To make compost tea take the composting material, put it in a bucket, let it sit for 24 hours, stir it and decant the water. Use the tea to water plants.

Nutrient value of compost: potassium, phosphate, nitrogen in concentrations low enough not to damage the plant

Two benefits of compost: aerates the soil and provides nutrition

Layer compost pile so you can regulate the amounts of brown and green

Compost is ready when the temperature has cooled and the ingredients have turned into a crumbly black substance.

Compost tools: thermometer, pitchfork

Compost components that can be stored: brown, dry leaves

Tea: water plants, spray on dry leaves

Bacteria, insects, fungus and worms help with organic breakdown

The "squeeze test" is when you grab a handful of compost and squeeze it and a little trickle of water comes out, it's enough. To dry it, spread it out. Too dry, add water.

Composting containers: wire basket, plastic drum that has air holes and can be turned, wooden pallets
